A washing machine cycle taking longer than expected can be frustrating, especially when you need the clothes before leaving home. The useful question is whether the time changes occasionally or the machine repeatedly struggles at the same point.

Samsung explains that load sensing, an uneven load, water pressure and excess detergent can change cycle duration. That does not mean every delayed wash has the same cause. Compare the selected programme and options with your usual settings before deciding the timer itself has failed.

A quick programme and a cotton programme are not a fair comparison. Make a note of extra rinse settings, the spin selection and whether the load contained one bulky item. You do not need to run several extra washes to gather this information; use what you noticed during the last normal load.

Identify where the wait happens
